Women's volleyball league opens with record club entries

The Cypriot women's volleyball league opened its 2026/27 season this week with ten clubs in the top division, the biggest field in the competition's history. Two newly promoted sides, one from Paphos and one from Larnaca, joined the established Nicosia and Limassol clubs that have shared the title in recent years.

League organisers pointed to a wave of grassroots investment over the past three years as the driver behind the growth, with several municipalities upgrading indoor courts specifically to meet league standards. Attendance figures from the opening weekend were also encouraging, with more than a few venues reporting near-capacity crowds.

On court, the reigning champions opened with a straightforward straight-sets win, while the promoted Larnaca side pushed a more established opponent to five sets in a match that suggested this season's table could be tighter than usual.

A full fixture list for the opening month has been published by the federation, with the first meeting between the two Nicosia rivals already pencilled in for early October.
